A new year

With Samhain fast approaching I have found myself wondering why I would bother making resolutions in January when now, the wiccan new year, is such a powerful time?
First, for my family- over the next year we will phase out plastic from our home. That means no more plastic straws, no more tupperware, no plastic travel mugs... I plan on buying a set of Strawesome straws (ok, several sets cuz they're all so beautiful...), as well as some LunchBots (very cool metal lunch/storage boxes)... I am very excited to get that much closer to a "green" home!
For me: totally cliche, but I'm going to get back in shape... I'm back down to (mostly) the size I want to be but I tried to do a single sit-up the other day & failed SOOOO miserably! So I'm gonna be getting my Ab Lounge from my parents & getting back on that. Also, now that I have my mei-tai, I can start taking Gator-bug on walks around the farm :)

hmm, just realized it's been awhile since I've posted... well, the end of the praying mantis breeding season is here, bringing with it the tragic death of our males :( we have one left... our females are all blooming wonderfully however :) with their cute pink bellies stretched out, just waiting to lay the egg sacks. and then in a few months we will have hundreds of teeny tiny babies!
we have also added a mostly white hurricane to our family... otherwise known as an 8 month old pit bull named Goob (my almost 14 month old named him, lol). he needs a little work- his previous owners apparently didn't mind having him jump on them (I have a few lovely bruises & small scratches to prove it)- but he's still just a puppy & they are rambunctious...
On the almost-toddler front: still no real walking :( he takes a step or two here & there, and can almost run with his hand on the wall or holding my hand, but he just seems so reluctant to let go of the crawling stage... he loves to give kisses now & will drop his toy just to "run" over and give me a few kisses, then go back to playing like it never happened. unfortunately, the past few days have also brought us to the "why don't you understand" stage... he will babble, then get loud, then clap his hands in obvious frustration, & he occasionally will flail his hands around & whack me in the face... the hitting is our primary issue, although I'm fairly clueless on how to get rid of it... my dad's way was to smack our hands but to me that just encourages the mindset that violence solves problems...
We're in the process of planning our first real Samhain celebration! I'm soooo excited because it's also our first holiday that we are properly celebrating :)

Whadya think?

=I'm seeing so many of my mommy friends starting up WAHM businesses & they seem to really enjoy it! I'm FINALLY in the process of starting up my own :) The thought of making cloth diapers seriously intimidates me though so I'm going to focus on nursery stuff like blankets, curtains, crib rail guards (the ones that protect baby from eating the varnish, not like bumper pads...), all completely green & natural of course! Now if I could just figure out where to start...

Fall additions are here!

Every year we wait anxiously for the first showing of our little green friends and this year is proving to be a very good one! We are now sharing our home with 9 praying mantids! 5 Chinese, 3 Carolina, and one that we have never seen before. I've really missed having these little guys around :) 3 of them are visibly pregnant which is always a mixed sort of feeling for us- it's exciting to watch them grow & then form their egg sacks & wait for the hundreds of babies to hatch, but it's also sad to know the moms won't survive the process... It was so exciting last night to come home & see our male (Tweak) mating with one of the females (Gimp). Even more exciting was waking up to see that Gimp is now visibly more rounded which equals ovulation & pregnancy :)

my first post :)

Well, I'm a little late getting this going but here we go! My only connection is through my Droid & for some reason I couldn't post from the Blogger site, I finally found the app though so yay!
Introductions: I am Colleen. Wife, mother, snake breeder. My husband is the mastermind of Baileys Herps. We got our first exotic snake (a normal ball python) last December & the family has definitely grown since then- a pair of red-tails, 4 more ball pythons, a bearded dragon, a uromastyx, and (in about a month) a pair of hypo-melanistic yellow anacondas. We also have two very spoiled native praying mantids that have free run of the house (except the nursery, for their safety & so our son doesn't try to catch & eat one, lol). We are also in the process of acquiring an adult Suriname red-tail, an adult ghost orange sunkist redtail (he is the very FIRST of his kind, the father of all orange sunkist, produced by David Beauchemin), a pair of adult high red Borneo blood pythons, an adult green anaconda, a pair of '09 green patternless African rock pythons, an '08 purple phase albino reticulated python.
Our son just turned 13 months a few days ago :) He has changed so much in the past year! hard to believe that this time a year ago he was only 5 lbs 13 oz (he was born at 6 lbs 7 but lost a little those first few weeks)... Now here he is, almost walking, kind of talking (mo-mo is monkey, daddy, mom-mom for mommy, kitty is anything on four legs except for dogs, dogs are all duke (my brother's dog), and a few other babbles I haven't figured out yet), chasing my cats, reaching for the snakes... He doesn't understand why he can't play with them too... We do let him spend time-a safe distance away with me sitting with him- around the snakes when Chris is holding one (we only handle one at a time for safety reasons) so Gabriel can feel comfortable around them as he grows up & so we can teach him that they can't be played with like cats & dogs... Another side note, we don't ever have him in the same area as any snake that is tempermental (our native rat snake) or that is in the process of shedding (they can become nippy at that point considering they are very vulnerable).
Thank you for sticking with me through all that :) Most of my posts won't ramble on so long! Also, hopefully I will figure out how to do pictures on here soon! Hard to brag about these new cloth diapers when I can't show them off! lol. One of my favorite WAHMs makes them, go check them out on her Facebook page : Her Majesty's Closet.
